Why we Worship

PSALM 47

Clap your hands, all peoples!
  Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared,
  a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
  and nations under our feet.
He chose our heritage for us,
  the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God has gone up with a shout,
  the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
  Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
  sing praises with a psalm!

Why Sing?

God reigns over the nations;
  God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
  as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
  he is highly exalted!

Why Scripture?

Newspapers are myopic. Who, where, when, how. The why is not so easy. Yes, online news is faster, but scripture alone gives us the big picture, giving us a framework of God's plan that calms our souls, reassuring us that the end is in God's hands.

...If they do not speak according to this word, they have no light of dawn. Isaiah 8:19-20

This word. The Bible is for our encouragement. It gives us hope. (Romans 15:4) Newspapers don't.  Take just one page of my Bible, for example - page 1087. Paul is thrilled with how things are going in Thessalonica, and he lets them know it. And he is hopeful for them. Why? Simply because all the suffering they are enduring is put into the context of God's ultimate purposes. Such as....

They are going to be counted worthy of the kingdom of God, the basis of their suffering.

Accompanied by angels, Jesus will be revealed from heaven in blazing fire.

Those who do not know God through Jesus Christ are in for a very disagreeable confrontation.

Everlasting destruction is their lot. No accessibility to the glorious presence of the Lord will then be possible.

Drawing up our own roadmap without considering God's has disastrous consequences.  Listen to Isaiah again....

But now, all you who light fires and provide yourselves with flaming torches, go, walk in the light of your fires and of the torches you have set ablaze. This is what you shall receive from my hand: You will lie down in torment. Psalm 50:10

But for those who have believed, there will be unbelievable joy and exhilaration.

In light of that truth, which only God's word can supply, the ongoing dramas of this world seem insignificant, don't they?

So what to do? Isaiah's final advice.  Put down the newspaper and pick up the word of God.

Who among you fears the LORD and obeys the word of his servant? Let him who walks in the dark, who has no light, trust in the name of the LORD and rely on his God.  Isaiah 50:14
