Sinners, Of Whom I Am The Worst

Christ Jesus came into the world to save sinners, of whom I am the worst. 1 Timothy 1:15

In his classic biography on John Newton, John Sargent said this about his subject....

"He that has much grace apprehends, much more than others, that great height to which his love ought to ascend, and he sees better than others how little a way he has risen towards that height, and therefore, estimating his love by the whole height of his duty, it appears astonishing little and low in his eyes."

That is one long sentence speaking to the humility of John Newton, and his awareness of his sin. Is it any wonder that he penned the words:

Amazing grace, how sweet the sound
That saved a wretch like me?

And think of the millions around the world who have sung this lyric, oblivious to the truth of it. Then think of the hundreds of thousands who have sung those words, and wept in wonder at our God of grace!
