Why we Worship

PSALM 47

Clap your hands, all peoples!
  Shout to God with loud songs of joy!
For the LORD, the Most High, is to be feared,
  a great king over all the earth.
He subdued peoples under us,
  and nations under our feet.
He chose our heritage for us,
  the pride of Jacob whom he loves.

God has gone up with a shout,
  the LORD with the sound of a trumpet.
Sing praises to God, sing praises!
  Sing praises to our King, sing praises!
For God is the King of all the earth;
  sing praises with a psalm!

Why Sing?

God reigns over the nations;
  God sits on his holy throne.
The princes of the peoples gather
  as the people of the God of Abraham.
For the shields of the earth belong to God;
  he is highly exalted!

Why Scripture?

Inventory isn't fun, but it is a necessary part of good business practice. And for the believer, this time of year gives us several weeks in a row when we can evaluate and re-evaluate our lives, and what we are giving ourselves away to.

Advent - A Time For Taking Stock

December 2, 2008

Therefore we do not lose heart. Though outwardly we are wasting away, yet inwardly we are being renewed day by day. For our light and momentary troubles are achieving for us an eternal glory that far outweighs them all. 2 Corinthians 4:16-17

Paul was a realist, and he didn't beat around the bush. Father time marches on. And it shows. Just take a look in the mirror!! Or don't... The season of advent provides an opportunity to look inside, and to evaluate. How is life shaping my faith? Or how is faith shaping my life? Listen to Alfred Delp...

"Advent is a time when we ought to be shaken and brought to a realization of ourselves. The necessary condition for the fulfillment of Advent is the renunciation of the presumptuous attitudes and alluring dreams in which and by means of which we always build ourselves imaginary worlds." WATCH FOR THE LIGHT

In other words, we get self-deceived. The "eternity in our hearts" gets drowned out by all things temporal. John the Baptist traveled around with one basic message - he preached repentance and the forgiveness of sins. Why? Because he was called to "prepare the way for the Lord, to make straight paths for him."

We need preparing. Think of it as a housecleaning. A distinguished guest is coming, and you want to be prepared, so that he will be at home.
